Sand Dunes: Mission Failed

Ice Sculptures (4)

A dune is a mound or ridge of sand or other loose sediment formed by the wind, especially on the sea coast or in a desert. That’s the definition that I managed to find on Google. For those who are not capable of imagining how the dunes look based on my description, I will be glad to help – dunes are simply a pile of sand, a small desert that can easily be found close to the beach. Yet, dunes are not always present in coastal areas. For example, it’s not a simple task to find dunes in Indonesia, despite the amount of beaches that we have.

Windswept and rippled, dunes had aroused my interest and I wanted to visit them a long time ago. But unfortunately, the first time I was in Vietnam, I didn’t have time to stop by Mui Ne. I got that chance during my second visit and third as well. It’s not difficult to explore this huge sand carpet. You can easily book a tour in your hotel in Mui Ne. Or if you have an adventurous spirit, you can go by yourself. All you need is a motorcycle and a map. I did try both ways. First, I went by bike, at noon, under the burning sun. To give a short summary for the trip – it was uncomfortable, hot, and painful. The pain was because the location of the white sand dune is quite far from town, so I was had to sit on the bike for about an hour or more.

Despite the inconvenience, the white sand dune is at its best when there’s still sunlight. The white soft sand looks very dazzling and at the same time, deadly. The good thing is the white sand dune is not as big as the Sahara, so I didn’t need to be afraid that I would not survive there with rescue teams arriving on camelback. The second way to visit the dunes was the tour. A tour is a good choice. The inexpensive tour normally includes the driver, jeep, and also some other tourist attractions such as the Fairy Stream, Red Sand Dunes, and Fishing Village. The price normally ranges from 9 to 12 dollars per person. It will definitely be cheaper if you have more than 2 persons. So, I recommend you wait before making a decision.
